Sometimes holidays come out of nowhere and the next thing you know you are scrambling to make plans and get the meal prepped in time. This was one of those times. Thanksgiving creeped up on us and we weren’t as prepared as we normally are. That didn’t stop us from getting the meal made and the table set. We were able to get it all done and the four of us had a lovely thanksgiving weekend.
This year it wasn’t just the food we were scrambling to make it was ensuring we did the table up right. Every time we go do design a table setting something usually doesn’t go quite to plan. Perhaps we can’t get a floral arrangement in the right colours, or can’t decide on the right cutlery, stemware, or napkins. There is almost always something, this time however Mom had an idea, and it all came together rather quickly which we were both thankful for and once again, we loved it.
As I have mentioned many times before we always start with one aspect of a setting to design around and this time it was the dinnerware. Designed for the American market in 1964 by Gill Pemberton and made by Langley the Mayflower design with its Autumnal colours, and homemade feel was the perfect inspiration for our setting. Mom and I had found this set while thrifting together a few weeks prior. She was drawn to it because it reminded her of something Denby would design. Sure enough Langley had been bought by Denby, so Mom wasn’t far off.
For this setting we knew we wanted flowers, and we found the perfect arrangement with yellow sunflowers, deep red lilies, a pop of orange and a little purple in the cabbage. It was perfect for a fall table setting, we just needed to find the right vase. Vases must be one of the most difficult things to find. It’s not easy to find one in the right style, height, and color but this time we got lucky. We already knew we were using the tablecloth we did which was neutral and had a key design. So after looking around the house Mom spotted a piece of West German pottery by Dumler and Breiden that was not only in the right colours but also had a key design.
Next, we added West German salt and pepper shakers by Goebel, smoked brown glass stemware and dish for cranberry sauce. Vintage Townhall Japanese flatware was used for the cutlery, and for an extra pop of colour burnt orange table napkins with rustic napkin rings. It all came together for yet again one of my favourite settings. Though let’s be fair, I say that every time we do a table setting as Mom reminded me after I announced it was my favourite.
We hope that you enjoyed your long weekend and got the chance to spend time with family. Mom, Dad, my brother, and I were lucky enough to do so. We are always so thankful that we get another chance to spend quality time with each other and get a chance to set the table and show all of you! Thanks for all of your support, we appreciate hearing from you when we do!
