We have been designing table settings over the past year for every special occasion, holiday, birthday, and day of celebration like Father’s Day. When we are trying to determine a theme or style for our table settings, we always take into consideration what we will be having for dinner. This Father’s Day we had pork chops , corn on the cob and a roasted potato medley side dish. We wanted the colour to come from the meal, so we decided to go for a contemporary table setting with neutral tones and natural elements such as stoneware and wood. It all came together for a simple but striking table setting.
Although we were going for contemporary, we couldn’t help adding a few vintage pieces such as the teak and glass salad bowl and the vintage corn on the cob cradle dishes. Contemporary corn on the cob dishes are often made to look like actual corn and are yellow in colour which wouldn’t work for this setting. Instead, the vintage dishes are clear but have a corn texture on the underside which subtly hints what they’re used for. We also added teak napkin rings to tie in the salad bowl.
The pottery serving dishes we used are contemporary pieces made by Hilborn Pottery Design in Cambridge, Ontario. Alongside the vintage salad bowl these two pieces from their pinch pot pottery line serve as an unconventional but interesting centerpiece.
Designing these table settings with my mother has become a hobby. We start brainstorming well in advance trying to decide what tablecloth, cutlery, and dishes to use. It is very satisfying to watch it all come together as we set the table and is a great way to make a family meal something special. We wish all the father figures a Happy Father’s Day and hope you can spend time with family. If not around the table, then close enough to enjoy their company!
